How The Group Was Formed

DSCF0022In 2003, Manchester hosted EUROPRIDE, during which Age Concern Manchester established there was a clear need for support for older, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people throughout the North West, and so a local lunch club was formed.

The small group quickly became known as OUT IN THE CITY, and after much discussion with the owners, TAURUS restaurant and bar on Canal St became its home.

Meeting on at least a fortnightly basis, the group quickly attracted a diverse range of interesting, intelligent, and fun loving personalities, who soon became a very supportive unit both to each other in times of difficulty, and to others in the community.picnic7

OUT IN THE CITY, transformed itself from a mere luncheon club into a social group participating in local theatre, art, cinema, day excursions etc, but more importantly became a collection of individuals with a desire to promote activities leading to friendship, comradeship, mental and physical health, education and self motivation in the older LGBT community.

The BBC covered our group in a brief article online, telling the stories of a couple of our members, and a little more about support for older gay/lesbian people in our city. To read this article please go HERE.

Hi all

Looking forward to meeting you all at Taurus tomorrow (10th April). Really excited about coming to share with you what we’re doing with help from our friends in Canal Street to fight HIV and AIDS thorugh education in Africa. Love the site too - really easy to use (and great to be able to interact through it - even a techno-phobe like me has managed to navigate my way around!)

See you tomorrow, Lily at Act4Africa
